DINING ROOM DESIGN: 5 MISTAKES TO AVOID

The dining table is oftentimes the conversation hub of the family. Gathered around the dining table, sharing a meal, we celebrate birthdays and anniversaries and various festive seasons. It is where a host of memories linger long after the event has transpired and the season has changed.

Hence, it wouldn't be presumptuous to give considerable thought in planning and accessorising this space.

A few points to ponder:

  1. Incorrect Measurements - This is one of the most common errors homeowners inadverently make when it comes to designing a dining area. Incorrect measurements compromise the essence of  dining room. The room should be proportionate to the general scale of the house, with adequate room for navigating around the furniture.
  2. Uncomfortable Furniture-  The dining table is indeed the show stopper in this place. So, when it comes to selecting the furniture, besides making a statement, make sure it also conforms to parameters of comfort with regard to the end users. Similarly  decide your chair preference . Ensure that it is a resilient piece of furniture, as this is one item that requires to be moved frequently.
  3. Improper Spacing- Avoid clutter in your dining area. Contrast an elaborate dining table with simple chairs or vice versa, to enhance the "flavors" of the room. In a narrower dining space, a bench would solve the space factor, as it can be tucked under the table when not it use. Decor and  greens ought to be juxtaposed in the scheme, to cue the general theme and space constraints, without being overwhelming.
  4. Insufficient Lighting - Food is a treat to all the senses. A visual treat necessitates appropriate lighting. Natural lighting in the form of courtyards and windows, as well as accent lights like chandeliers over the table, concealed false ceiling lights, and wall sconces , if seamlessly integrated give a variety of options to switch the mood to suit the occasion.
  5. Mix 'N' Match – An eclectic-style space is an orchestrated effort, not a hap hazardbut melange, of patterns, colours, & other collectibles, including functional pieces of crockery and glassware. When entertaining, pieces that do not sync, distract guests in an unpleasant manner. The discordant note can be eliminated by weaving a colour to knit the room, or a particular decor pattern/regional style throughout all the elements in the room.

However, the best dining space always remains a reflection of your interests and personality traits. It is indeed what makes a space your place.
